Description

African “safari” animal shaped bone charm-style necklace on linen thread.

•   Bring authentic African style to your outfit with this unique Fair Trade “safari” animal necklace, featuring 3 delicately-crafted bone animal shaped charms.

•   The small beads on the linen thread are a mix of cow bone beads, hand made ceramic beads from West Africa, seeds and glass.

•   The African animal charms are made from waste cow bone. A sanding machine is used to shape the bone and then the patterns are created by hand with hot wax – a technique known as batik.

•   The necklace has 3 animal charms which includes a selection from “The Big 5” – zebra, giraffe, rhino, elephant and lion and buffalo.

•   Closes with a brass hook at the top. The thread is olive green and made from linen.

•   Part of a range of themed ethical jewellery pieces. (Click on the “Batik” Tag above to reveal the selection.) And check out the “You may also like” product suggestions below.

Hand-crafted by skilled Fair Trade artisans at Excel Concepts in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya – bringing you a distinctive product inspired by locally-sourced materials and displaying the vibrancy of African culture.
“Asante sana” (Thank you).

DIMENSIONS – when opened out, the total length is 42 cm approximately.
The actual animal charms are approximately 2 cm wide x 1 cm high.

Did you know?
Batik is a traditional method where a design is applied using hot wax, then the object is dyed (black in this case) and the dried wax is removed to reveal a distinctive and unique white silhouette of the wax seal.Unique Fair Trade choker, featuring delicately-crafted square bone beads with a “star” print.

And if you want to find out more, my Blog post What is Batik and how is it used for Jewellery Making in Africa is just for you.

Also note: I take care to ensure that pictures and descriptions are as accurate and representative as possible, but please be aware that these products are handmade in the developing world (often using locally-sourced and/or recycled materials) and minor variations may occur – making each item truly unique!
