Choker “safari” animal shape charms and beads on recycled copper.
• Unique Fair Trade animal charm choker, created using a mix of cow bone beads, handmade ceramic beads from West Africa, seeds and wood beads.
• The African animal charms are made from waste cow bone. A sanding machine is used to shape the bone and then the patterns are created by hand with hot wax – a technique known as Batik.
• These beads and charms are then strung together on a recycled copper necklace and clasp.
• The necklace includes 3 animal charms – a giraffe and a lion and one of the following – a rhino or an elephant.
• Part of a range of themed ethical jewellery pieces. (Click on the “Batik” Tag above to reveal the selection.)
And check out the “You may also like” product suggestions below.
DIMENSIONS – the necklace has length of 45 cm when opened out.
The actual animal charms are approximately 2 cm wide x 1 cm high.
“Kazuri”, which means small and beautiful in Swahili, certainly applies to these bone animal charms!
This Fair Trade choker with animal shape charms has been hand-crafted by skilled artisans at Zakale Creations in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya – more than an item of jewellery, it’s your own piece of Africa!
Here in the UK, cow bone is hardly what we would consider a crafting material, but in Kenya, cow bone is both an inexpensive raw material and traditional crafting medium.
Please note: the bone used is always and only from the “Bovine species” i.e. a cow. It is NOT from the female gender of large mammals (such as the whale, walrus or elephant).
You can discover more about how Batik is used in jewellery making in Kenya in my Blog post.
Also note: I take care to ensure that pictures and descriptions are as accurate and representative as possible, but please be aware that the products are handmade in the developing world (often using locally-sourced and/or recycled materials) and minor variations may occur – making each item truly unique!
